| 1950's Party 2011 |
| 1950's Party On May 23rd, the St. Johnsville Rehab. & Nursing Center designated it 1950's day, with all planned events reflecting the culture from that decade. It originated out of a Dietary Department idea to serve lunch with foods commonly found on the menu of drive-in diners during that era. But the idea soon took on a life of its own, as the Activities Department coordinated its entire schedule around the same motif. All departments and their staff were encouraged to dress-up as well, and the response was a resounding success. It started with a bowling game featuring a Route 66 banner and 1950's slang trivia to earn an extra frame. Following that was the aforementioned luncheon experience, where residents had choices ranging from cheeseburgers and string fries, to onion rings and banana splits. The entire dining room was decorated with 50's ornaments and the like, including guitars and 45 rpm records. Similar props adorned the Activities room and selected spots throughout the facility. Next up was memory lane, featuring a makeshift version of the Concentration game, where all the images used were carefully chosen to represent pop culture icons from that time. To cap off the day, there was an afternoon movie shown, with "Dirty Dancing" replacing "Grease" as the film of choice. Here the residents also enjoyed homemade malted milkshakes, concession candies and popcorn while watching the danced-themed flick. To be sure, the special day was a celebration that was enjoyed immensely by both residents and personnel alike. All departments, including Administration, Nursing, and Maintenance, participated enthusiastically in dressing-up. This, along with everything else, helped create a fun and festive atmosphere that was just reveled in! |
